Ejder ‘EJ’ Ginyol had been playing catch-up all week in the Masters' Worlds, after a poor opening day. The Turkish rider finally came good in the last race, finishing second while the front runner all week, Billy Guy-Maupas from France, could only manage 9th in the fading breeze. Ginyol won the world title by two points, with Guy-Maupas second and the Grand Masters world champion James Johnsen from Denmark also taking third overall. Thailand’s Benyapa Jantawan won the women’s Masters fleet, with Monika Zizlavska from the Czech Republic in second and Claire Morel from France in third.

In the Kitefoil Open Masters World Championship, Turkey’s Ejder ‘EJ’ Ginyol continues a strong comeback as he tries to close the gap to series leader Billy Guy-Maupas from France. “It was a tough day,” said Ginyol. “The competition didn't start very well for me. The first day, my mind was a little bit out of focus because last week I twisted my knee and I was so nervous over the last week. Would I be fit enough? I rested as much as I could. I didn't walk, I didn't train, I didn't do any practice. But then on the first day I made lots of mistakes.

Billy Guy Maupas leads Masters Worlds after four heats
After four races in warm winds of 8 to 16 knots, some clear patterns are already beginning to emerge in the three world-class kitefoiling contests taking place in Torregrande, Sardinia.
For riders aged 35 and over, this is the Masters World Championship. Denmark’s James Johnsen won the opening heat but the next three wins went to Billy Guy Maupas from France. Aged 52, Johnsen was very happy with his first day in Torregrande. “It was such a good day on the water,” said the dedicated Dane. “I was on my 23 [square metre kite] all day, and it felt very good.

An international group of talented riders are getting ready to contest the Kitefoil Open Masters World Championship in the Marina di Torregrande in Oristano, Sardinia.
Taking place from 22 to 28 May 2023, the event is the latest in a long line of world-class kitefoiling regattas to be staged in this part of the Italian island. In recent years Oristano has earned a reputation as one of the most reliable arenas for high-speed wind-powered watersports.
